Strength Training for the Endurance Athlete at MVP

Adding a proper strength training program to an endurance training protocol has been shown to:

a. Increase Short term endurance (4-8 min) during both cycling and running.

b. Increase Long-Term cycling to exhaustion at 80%  of  VO2 max

c. Not affect Maximal VO2 max during both cycling and Running

d. Can lead to more economical sport specific performance

With all of these benefits shown, the next step is to find that proper strength training program.  The combination of strength and endurance training can be very complicated. One has to look at many variables. The two training methods are intuitively opposite. But when combined in the right way the strength and conditioning professional can be a valuable tool for the endurance athlete.
